Circle of Mercy Mission Statement

We believe that doing justice and loving mercy are intimately tied to walking humbly wiht God. Our purposed is to nurture spiritual formation in ways that support prophetic and redepmtive work in the world.

Who We Are

We are an ecumenical congregation, drawing from a variety of confessional traditions, but choosing to be affiliated with the Alliance of Baptists and the United Church of Christ. We participate and offer leadership in a variety of mission involvements locally, nationally, and internationally. At the heart of our community life is worship. Every Sunday evening, a lively mix of adults and children gathers around a welcoming table to sing and pray, share concerns and celebrations, reflect on the intersection of Scripture and life, meditate in silence, and break the bread of communion. There's always room for others who are on a journey to engage their faith and the world.

Circle of Mercy began as a shared daydream among Nancy Hastings Sehested, Ken Sehested, and Joyce Hollyday during hikes in the mountains of Western North Carolina in the spring of 2000. Their conversations on the trails finally led to the launching of Circle of Mercy in December 2001, on the first Sunday of Advent. Initially, the congregation worshiped in participants’ homes, but it soon outgrew all available living rooms, and space was secured in the parish hall of the Episcopal Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville. On December 3, 2006—the fifth anniversary of Circle of Mercy’s launching—Nancy, Ken, and Joyce offered reflections on the history and vision of the congregation. Read them here.

Mission Groups

It is our practice in Circle of Mercy to form mission groups when members “sound the call” for others to join them in a particular ministry to which they have been drawn. These are some of the groups that have formed over the years.  Currently, the Sermon on the Mount Group and the Immigration Mission Group are active.
